The US Department of
Energy (DoE) and the National
Institute for Nuclear Physics - Italy (INFN) announce the 2015
Summer Exchange Program edition, addressed to US and Italian students
in
science and engineering.
Students are given a
chance to work on projects
that will deepen their experience in the fields of science and
technology which are relevant for their academic training.
The Gran Sasso National
Laboratory (LNGS)
is one of the four INFN
National laboratories. It is the largest underground laboratory in the
world for experiments in particle physics and nuclear astrophysics.
In particular, the following groups have expressed their interest in
the program and they invite US students to join their research
activities in the programs: CUORE
experiment, DarkSide Experiment, STELLA
low background counting facility and XENON
experiment.
Candidates must be
enrolled as students by a US
university and they must have begun, at the time of application, at least the third year of a US
University curriculum in physics, engineering or computing science.
They can join a team at
Gran Sasso National
Laboratory
for two months between June 1 and Oct. 31, 2015.
Opportunities include
participation in physics
analysis activities of running experiments as well as involvement in
detector developments.
Four
positions are available for this Edition:
1 position for:
|
CUORE
experiment
Project: Development of rare events
(Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay) particle detectors at LNGS, in the
CUORE experiment.
- The
student will take part in the preparation and running of innovative
tests for particle detectors (preparation, installation, data-taking
and analysis) and will get familiar with bolometric particle detectors.
Basic knowledge of particle physics is preferred.

1 position for:
|
DarkSide
experiment
Project: Development
of Direct Dark Matter
Search with Depleted Argon.
- The student will participate in the
operation, data taking, and data analysis of the prototype detector
DarkSide-10, operating in Hall C of the underground LNGS, within a
low-background shield.

***************************************************************************************************************************************************************
1 position for:
STELLA low
background counting facility
Project: Low background measurements at the
LNGS in the STELLA low background counting facility.
- The
student will take part in the routine analysis work involving gamma and
alpha spectrometry and will get acquainted with using the technique of
Monte-Carlo simulations. Basic knowledge of nuclear and particle
physics,
programming skills (C++, Fortran) and familiarity with computers is
preferred.

***************************************************************************************************************************************************************
1 position for:
|
XENON
experiment
Project:
Development of Double Phase Xenon Dark Matter Detector.
- The
student will take part in the design and test of the 'muon veto' system
for the XENON1T direct Dark Matter search experiment. Performance of
water proof light detectors (photomultipliers) to be used in the water
Cherenkov detector will be tested in laboratory. Different solutions
for the electronics and data acquisition system will be analyzed and
compared.
