N. 2 Post Graduate Fellowships in the research area of "SOLAR NEUTRINO OSCILLATIONS"

We invite applications for two twelve-months fellowships for doctoral training at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, in the field of Solar Neutrino Oscillations.

After an interruption of two years the experiment  BOREXINO started again. Borexino is the only experiment able to measure in the real time solar neutrinos below 1 MeV. In this moment we are testing the purification system and we measure the radioactivity levels via the Counting Test Facility, a detector installed at the Gran Sasso to measure ultratraces in radioactivity. The tuning of the electronics is under way and we plan to complete the filling of the detector very soon and then to start the data taking. The applicants should have an academic background in Elementary Particle Physics and in the techniques of underground rare events experiments. Also knowledge or expertize in Radiochemistry and/or Chemistry is welcome.

Further information about this project can be obtained in the Borexino web site: http://borex.lngs.infn.it/ and contacting Prof. G. Bellini, spokesman of Borexino (gianpaolo.bellini@mi.infn.it) or Eng. G. Ranucci, project manager (gioacchino.ranucci@mi.infn.it).

Applicants must be nationals of an European Union member state (excluding Italy), or an associated state or have been residing in the Community for at least the last five years. They must be 35 years old or less (however allowance is made for time actually served in compulsory military civily service and for child care with a maximum of two year per child).

Fellows will receive an allowance of 1200 euro/month which will not be subject to social security contribution deductions. It will not be subject to income tax if a bilateral agreement between Italy and the country of residence has been stipulated. Travel cost to and from the Gran Sasso Laboratories will be reimbursed.

More information can be obtained by visinting the EU web site: http://www.cordis.lu/improving/fellowships/home.htm

Applicants should send (via e-mail) a letter of application and a C.V. and arrange (via e-mail) a letter from the supervisor of the doctoral studies in the home University, who recognize the stay at the training site is an integral part of the doctoral studies.

All documents must be sent by May 1st 2005, to:
