TO NON EU USERS AT LNGS
Application to renew residence permit (hereinafter 'PdS') has to be submitted via post office AT LEAST TWO MONTHS AHEAD current PdS expiration date: renewal of an expired PdS is not allowed. Of course, all requirements by which PdS was initially granted must still exist.

Without prejudice to specific occurrences covered by Italian Immigration Act in force, the residence permit is renewed for the same length as first PdS was granted (eg, a six- month PdS can be renewed for additional six months and so on).

Short-term and long-term visits: STAY!

NON-EU NATIONALS

STAYS UP TO NINETY DAYS (in a six-month period):
declaration of presence ('dichiarazione di presenza') for stays up to ninety days is required for non-EU nationals; this has to be done by the local Police Dept. (currently in Avezzano,  read below) within eight working days from the date of entry in Italy or in the Schengen Area. A readable entry stamp on passport can be considered equivalent to the declaration of presence.
  Declaration of presence is accomplished by one of the two options below:
1. at the Italian border police as Country is entered (entry stamp on passport);
2. at the Police Dept. of Avezzano (about 70 kilometres away from the Lab)
    COMMISSARIATO DI PUBBLICA SICUREZZA (see map)
    VIA ALLENDE, 1
    67051 - Avezzano (AQ)
    (Opening hours 9:00-12:00 / Mon-Tue-Thu-Fri / address to  'SPORTELLO PER L'AQUILA - Ufficio immigrazione')

Documents required (point 2):
- LNGS reference letter;
- passport;
- copy of passport (all pages);
- two passport-size pictures.
(you will have to provide the address of your current accommodation in Italy)

STAYS ABOVE NINETY DAYS:
non-EU nationals have to apply for residence permit ('permesso di soggiorno') for stays longer than ninety days per six month-period.

To that end, prearranged blank forms are available in my office or by any Italian Post Offices 'Sportello Amico'. These have then to be mailed via post office pursuant to the usual procedure.

As registered letter from Police is received, meetings will be in
    COMMISSARIATO DI PUBBLICA SICUREZZA (see map)
    VIA ALLENDE, 1
    67051 - Avezzano (AQ)

     (Opening hours 9:00-12:00 / Mon-Tue-Thu-Fri / address to  'SPORTELLO PER L'AQUILA - Ufficio immigrazione')

Residence permits are issued on Wednesdays.

EU NATIONALS

EU nationals are required to apply for registration by the Registry Office ('Ufficio Anagrafe') of the Comune concerned for stays in Italy longer than three months.

Agreement between Questura of L'Aquila and LNGS - April 2007

- Any Post Offices in L'Aquila can provide foreign users with the proper set of blank form(s) which are also known as "kits".

- Just a few Post Offices, though, accept applications for permit of stay ("permesso di soggiorno"):

        - Ufficio Postale in Via Monte Sirente, 1, loc. Vallepretara - L'Aquila;

        - Ufficio Postale in Via Leonardo da Vinci 9, Pettino, L'Aquila (next to A24 L'Aquila Ovest exit);

        - Ufficio Postale in Camarda (Camarda is a small village along the s.s. 17 bis to Paganica).

Foreigners will receive a set of forms inside a white envelope with a yellow strip on the side.

Read the general information paper on how to fill out the forms (also in Italian)

SPECIFIC FOR FOREIGNERS
Each kit contains 2 forms (MOD. 209) plus general information papers:
    - MODULO 1 (FORM 1) consists of 8 pages in total.
    An explanatory tutorial guide on how to fill MODULO 1 in can be found here.

    - MODULO 2 (FORM 2) consists of 3 pages in total.
    An explanatory tutorial guide on how to fill MODULO 2 in can be found here.

Enclosures/attachments: besides the form(s) above, check which additional documents must be enclosed (attached), according to the permit of stay you are applying for (see here).

EXAMPLE: users applying permits of stay for "studio" for Scientific Research (most LNGS users match these kind of visa/permit of stay) will have to fill the 2 forms (mod. 209, see above); to attach a complete xerox copy of passport; to attach LNGS reference letter.

Check also some examples which might be useful to fill the forms.
